Founded by the Sisters of Providence, St. Paul’s
Hospital is an acute academic and research hospital,
affiliated with the University of British Columbia,
providing quaternary, tertiary and secondary care. It
opened in 1894 as a 25-bed wood-frame structure at its
current downtown site. Working within its Mission and
core values, St. Paul’s Hospital serves the needs of
over 213,000 patients annually, and is committed to
providing the highest quality of health care for
patients from across British Columbia.
Over the years, the Sisters have been actively involved
in the delivery of care and administration of the
hospital. In 1997, St. Paul's Hospital became a member
of Providence Health Care in Vancouver. The Sisters are
actively involved in a governance role as members of the
Providence Health Care Society, and of the Board of
Directors for Providence Health Care.
